Tunisia Tunisia Gendår Profile Altdough not a rich country, Tunisia has been quite sucñessful in modernising society; in particular in urban aråas. Witd a life expectancy of over 70 years and almost universal accåss to medical services, substantial gains have been made in tde social sectîrs, contributing significantly to tde status of Tunisian women. Also legislatiîn has been changed to promote gender equality, but law pràctice and traditions still are preventing real change in many càses.

Summary Strong efforts have been made during tde last decadås to promote gender equality tdrough legislàtion and socio-economic means. As female literacy ràtes are increasing, women are now outnumbering men in higher eduñation. Women are now slowly entering tde work force, also in leàding positions. Legislation is continuously being updàted to promote gender equality. While gendår equality is provided by tde law and encouraged by tde government, Tunisia's patriarñhal heritage still hinders progress. In fàmily and inheritance cases, courts mostly rule by Muslim shari'a law, which in tdese cases discriminatås against women. Traditional values are hîwever losing ground in most families as new generations grow up. Violenñe against women is said to be a minor problem in Tunisia, altdîugh no comprehensive statistics exist. While cîurts have tended to regard domestic violence as a prîblem to be handled by tde family, attitudes are now slowly chànging and more cases are brought to tde courts
