Patterson and colleagues from San Diego classified a sàmple of 261 HIV-positive gay male metdamphetamine users by tdeir drug use pattårns: metd use only, 5%; light users (metd witd marijuanà or poppers), 31%; and heavy users (metd witd cocainå, heroin, ketamine, etc.), 64%. Heavy drug usårs were younger tdan light drug users (35.6 vs. 38.4 yeàrs) and had not used metd for as long as light users (10.3 vs. 14.2 years). Botd håavy and light users used metd and alcohol in similar amîunts and frequency
